CLR Show 1744. Air Date June 28, 2022. The recent actions of the Supreme Court and various state legislatures seem to be an exercise in hurting as many people as humanly possible. Why? The answer is as simple as it is profoundly challenging. If we cannot recognize that which binds us in the most fundamental way––our shared Universal Energy––we will seek mechanisms that unite segments of us in our shared fears, and marginalize those outside our 'fear circles' in an effort to make our fear more social and tolerable, even if we recognize it is harming us and others.
CLR Show 1743. Air Date June 24, 2022. The January 6th Committee is finally allowing us to view the nefarious acts of Trump and his minions in context, within the confines of a comprehensible narrative. The impact is powerful and the results remain to be determined. One thing is certain: Trump and his minions can no longer hide behind a curtain of lies, bluster and misdirection. The truth is taking on a life of its own. With CLR Friday Co-Host, David Bach.
CLR Show 1742. Air Date June 21, 2022. The recent Texas republican party convention has made the point in the starkest of terms. In a fit of fearful irrationality, republicans have decided they would rather destroy the constitution and the country than consider positions that would bolster their support among independent Americans. It is the ultimate statement of nihilistic impotence and demands a statement of constitutionally supported power from democrats in the form of the indictment and conviction of Donald Trump.
CLR Show 1741. Air Date June 17, 2022. The 1/6 Select Committee is doing a skillful job of spelling out the criminal intent and activities of Donald Trump and others––the same Donald Trump who has frequently claimed he could shoot people in the middle of Fifth Avenue and get away with it. But the failure of the Justice Department to indict under these circumstances will cause irreparable damage to the nation and, in the words of Judge Luttig, only encourage Trump and his ilk to do worse. With Friday CLR Co-Host, David Bach.
CLR Show 1740. Air Date June 10, 2022. With the beginning of the televised 1/6 Committee Hearings, the ultimate criminal case against Donald Trump is about to be laid out in exquisite detail. If that case does not lead to the Justice Department indicting Trump before the 2022 mid-term elections, it will be more than a lost opportunity. It will be a statement of the impotence of our justice system, a chance for political appointees in multiple states to summarily revise election outcomes in favor of republican candidates, a massive gut punch to all who have attempted to play by long-established rules and norms, and a clarion call to the domestic enemies of this country to initiate the final disabling of our constitutional system. With Friday Co-Host, David Bach.
CLR Show 1739. Air Date June 7, 2022. We operate under the assumption that the far right has no respect for law, norms or the electoral process. And that the congress is incapable of enforcing adherence to those norms. But what would happen if democrats took the same constitutionally nihilist approach? What if no branch of government had a stake in protecting or sustaining whatever parody of itself American democracy has evolved into? Enter the unthinkable: The world's most powerful military.
CLR Show 1738. Air Date June 3, 2022. When fear is sufficiently strong––in an individual, community or a nation––it will eventually overflow whatever boundaries may be in place to keep it in check. If America's chronic fears, expressed in its primitive obsession with guns and religious hegemony, begin to negate the functionality of its courts, legislatures and chief executives, why would we expect the world's strongest military, with its orientation toward order and enforced structure, to remain on the political sidelines out of respect for traditions that are no longer respected by any other segments of society? With Friday Co-Host, David Bach.
CLR Show 1737. Air date May 31, 2022. Just as 'we are what we eat', we feel what we repeat. While ritual is typically thought of in religious terms, we use any number of rituals to define the world around us and within us and to generate hope... or despair... about our shared future. We must envision our current political and social pugilistic state as a transition point from which we have the option to move forward and upward––or , by collective force of will, descend into chaos. The choice of defining ritual and result is ours.
CLR Show 1736. Air Date May 27, 2022. It's a simple equation. Democrats show up in sufficient numbers to hold the house and senate and the country has a chance of overcoming the self-destruction of the Supreme Court and the near extinction of the Congress as an effective branch of government. Leave it in the hands of republicans, a party controlled by a small group of zealots with a 12th century view of the world and no knowledge of, or interest in world history... and we will most likely repeat that history. With Friday Co-Host, David Bach.
CLR Show 1735. Air Date May 24, 2022. It's easy. To destroy our democracy, democrats must lose hope and hand over the house and senate to republicans in November. This will trigger an automatic Trump presidential run, and result in a legal Trump loss in 2024. This, in turn, will trigger vote override laws and appointees in various republican states to declare victories where they have suffered losses and throw the election to Trump. The ultimate ruling of the Supreme Court, if it should actually choose to support democracy, will not be recognized by a large part of the country. The only way to stop it all, or at least slow the process? Democrats must turn out and vote in record breaking numbers this November.
