CLR Show 1589. Air Date August 20, 2021. Our reflexive willingness to declare Afghanistan a 'worst case scenario', devoid of all historical context, is further evidence of our national PTSD and a tendency to default to fear and hopelessness. We can cure ourselves - and neutralize the most politically sociopathic among us - only with massive doses of truth. With CLR Friday Co-Host, David Bach.
CLR Show 1588. Air Date August 18, 2021. The media frenzy on all sides about the 'failure' to plan for an orderly withdrawal of American military and civilians from Afghanistan is misplaced, and self-defeating for democrats. There is no such thing as an orderly withdrawal, only best and worst case messy scenarios. Biden must deal with a moderately bad case, but far from worst.
CLR Show 1587. Air Date August 16, 2021. No one––or not many people are arguing that the US military control of Kabul and a handful of provincial capitals was a sustainable one. But the speed with which the Taliban have taken back regional control and the unwillingness of Afghans to defend what we think of as a country has been breathtaking. It shouldn't be.
CLR Show 1586. Air Date August 11, 2021. The 'capitulation' of 19 republican senators into the 'yea' column for the basic senate infrastructure bill is further proof that President Joe Biden knows how to get things done. Human contact and basic respect are the keys to crippling the trumpian grievance juggernaut.
CLR Show 1585. Air Date August 6, 2021. It is dangerous and wrong to extrapolate conclusions from single events. Political media asks us to do that on a daily basis. However, it is far more dangerous to ignore burgeoning trends––like the growing republican belief that voting is a privilege and not a right. Such beliefs lay the groundwork for the dissolution of a democracy. With CLR Friday Co-Host, David Bach.
CLR Show 1584. Air Date August 4, 2021. Calls for the impeachment of Andy Cuomo by NY democrats should remind trumpian republicans that there is still a real, very American political world out there beyond the realm of wild fantasy, blind grievance and gut wrenching fear. Unless they succeed in destroying the country, they will have no choice but to re-join that world.
CLR Show 1583. Air Date August 2, 2021. The great trumpian lie––that freedom to live in a state of perpetual, selfish grievance is the most American of freedoms––is being disproved at breakneck speed, and largely by its most ardent supporters. Witness reactions to infrastructure and COVID-19.
CLR Show 1582. Air Date July 30, 2021. The untenability––and downright absurdity––of the far right's positions on masks, vaxing and the events of January 6 are becoming progressively more obvious. It takes very little imagination to forecast the irrelevancy of Donald Trump, very possibly before the midterms.
CLR Show 1581. Air Date July 28, 2021. The view from 50K feet shows the demise of Trump as kingmaker and the disillusionment of republican voters, boding poorly for their chances in the 2022 midterms. The reasons are evident and will become even more so as The House Select Committee on 1/6 hearings continue. Democrats must believe and act on their belief that America can evolve positively.
CLR Show 1580. Air Date July 26, 2021. We consider one view that holds January 6th marked the end of the Trump Era, and that all that has followed is little more than a collective tantrum by leaderless adolescents acting out their feelings of impotence, not the start of the 'real' insurrection.
